Guide to Healthy Choices in the Supermarket

Going to the supermarket can be your worst enemy!!

Get to know your supermarket and make a plan of attack.  We have the power to decide which foods to buy at the grocery store.  Avoid the aisle that have the foods that will throw you off track (junk food - chips, candy or  cookies). Bring a shopping list (planning ahead is key).

Best Choices

  1. Fruit - Fresh, frozen and canned (canned fruit should be your last choice)
  2. Vegetables - Fresh, frozen and canned (look for no salt or rinse with water to remove the sodium
  3. Grains - Whole grain are the best
  4. Dairy -  Non-fat and low-fat milk, yogurt, low-fat and fat free cheeses (try to limit process cheese or better still eliminate)
  5. Meat, beans, fish and poultry - Lean meats, skinless poultry, fish, legumes (dried beans are the best - canned should be low sodium)

Note:  Don't forget that your local farmers market is a great place for finding healthy food.

BRING A LIST

And stick to it! Healthy decisions start at home.  The day before you go grocery shopping make your list of the foods from your nutrition guide. Planning ahead can improve your health while saving you time and money.
Remember the check out line has the most temptations.  Be strong.
